Around 3100 BCE, Menes became king in Upper Egypt. He wanted to connect Upper and Lower Egypt. So, Menes took control of Lower Egypt. To strengthen his control, he married a Lower Egypt princess. He also combined the crowns from Upper and Lower Egypt. Menes started the first Egyptian dynasty. Historians think that Menes was the first Pharaoh. Pharaoh means "great house."
